Apple release an update this afternoon to fix the iPhone text message hack I spoke about yesterday.  To read Apples release, click here.  To update, open iTunes and plug in your iPhone.  It will prompt you for the update.  If anyone has questions or problems with the update, contact Apple’s support at http://support.apple.com.

When I first started writing for my blog, I was trying to find a way to organize my thoughts.  I found a website called Evernote.  What exactly is it?  It is essentially a notepad that is accessible from you computer, iPhone, or the Internet.  I immediately feel in love with the product for the following reasons.

  • iPhone access – I love my iPhone and this allows me to write quick notes while on the go.  I can also take pictures and store them with my notes.
  • Desktop access – While I am looking at a website or reading an e-mail, I can send that information to my Evernote account.
  • Web access – Accessible from any location with Internet access.  Great for accessing information when on the go.
  • Separate Notebooks – Keep your notes organized by subject or project.  This is excellent for blogging.  Put all your thought for 1 article in 1 notebook.

I believe this is the perfect application for anyone who is starting out blogging.  Speaking of blogging, check out Week 2 of our 6 weeks to social networking which is on blogging.  It will be posted next Thursday.

There is a new hack that is going to be going around today affecting iPhone users. If you receive a text message with a square character, shut off you phone immediately!!! Apple has not released a fix for this yet. I will be looking for a fix for this later today, but forward this to everyone who has an iPhone. Thanks everyone.

Here is a link to more information on this.

Most businesses already have a website, but if yours doesn’t, this is the most important step.  The goal of social networking is to draw traffic to your website by establishing yourself as an expert.  This might sound difficult, but it really isn’t that hard.  We are all experts.  Everyone of us knows a great deal about our profession.  The problem is that no one know how much you know and why you are better than your competition.

Where should I have my website?

This is important, but not the most important question.  I am a big fan of Netfirms.  Their support is great, the offer WordPress software for blogging (see next weeks article on blogging).  You can really have the website listed almost anywhere, just make sure you have it.  Below is a list of some of the great companies I have worked with in the past.
  • Netfirms
  • GoDaddy
  • Network Solutions
I know there are hundreds more, but I believe that you get what you pay for.  I know these are reasonably prices services with excellent support if you need it.  If I have a problem, they fix it.  I do not need my website being down or my e-mail not working.  I also know that all 3 support WordPress for blogging software, which is easy to use for anyone getting started, but also powerful enough for people to use for a long time.

What needs to be on my website?

That’s also a great question.  It doesn’t need to be elaborate right now, but make sure you have at least the following information on your website
  • Products and services you offer – Make sure to list everything that is important.  If you offer many service or products, don’t list them all maybe just try to list the most popular.
  • Contact Page – Make sure you list your phone number, contact form (try not to list the e-mail address unless you can do it correctly, more on this later), and your address.
  • About Us – It’s important for people to know about you for them to trust you.  If you are comfortable putting up a picture, go ahead and do that.  Tell about your work history (only what is relevant to your profession), certifications, associations you belong to, and anything else work related.  Don’t talk about your dog, children, or new TV!!!!
  • Sitemap – This is a little more complicated to setup.  A sitemap is a file that lists all the pages and links on your site.  It is used by Google and other search engines to index your website.  The easiest way is to use a program such as Google SiteMap Building Windows Version (http://www.sitemapbuilder.net).  It will ask you for your website and it will automatically extract the links and create a sitemap for you.  We will use a similar process for your blog to make sure those links are indexed by Google.  You will then use Google Webmaster tools to submit this to Google.
We will add more to the website as the weeks go by, but this is a great start.
*** I talked a little earlier about not listing your e-mail address on your website.  I am not saying to not let people know your e-mail address, but rather make sure it is done correctly.  If you list your website the wrong way, the SPAM will follow you and it’s nearly impossible to get rid of.  Stick with a contact form for now.  If you want more information on how to safely list your e-mail address, just contact me and I will point you in the right location. ***
There is the assignment for everyone for the first week.  Make sure you get your website up and your sitemap is created.
